Squarenix Announces The Last Remnant
The new Game Informer has a revealing look at the latest Square Enix RPG creation, and thanks to a transcription of that article by Sallokin of NeoGAF, we now have the first details of the game.
To begin, it's called The Last Remnant and appears to be a brand new IP from the company. There will be two playable characters; apparently Square Enix has created one to appeal to the Japanese gaming audience, and one to appeal to Western audiences. Rush Sykes is an 18-year-old sword wielding hero. The Conqueror is a mysterious character with a "dark" and "cruel" demeanor. We'll leave you to figure out which hero is for which market. As for the titular "Remnants", they take the form of many different objects, like animals or weapons, and they contain great power. But like any regular RPG, most of the game's combat will focus on traditional melee and magical combat. The battle system seems to resemble the kind found in Legend of Dragoon; it's turn-based, but will incorporate QTE-style button presses to add an action element to the proceedings. Four different races of beings have been confirmed to be in the game so far: humans, aquatic fish-beings, lizard humanoids, and feline humanoids. Hiroshi Takai is making his directorial debut with The Last Remnant. He's done work on some of Square Enix's lesser known titles, including The Bouncer, SaGa Frontier, and Legend of Mana. He also was on the Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy XI teams. Other known credits to the game include Kouzi Kobayashi, the man behind the FMV cinemas in Final Fantasy VII and FInal Fantasy VIII. Perhaps most importantly, the game is running on the Unreal 3 engine. According to Game Informer, Square can't reveal which systems will play host to The Last Remnant just yet, but given the graphical complexity and Takai's mention of the game going multiplatform, it's a pretty sure bet you'll see this on the Xbox 360 and PS3 when it releases in the spring of 2008. As soon as screenshots are available to the press, we'll be sure and give you a glimpse of the game. Expect more info at next weekend's Square Enix party in Japan. Posted on 10 May 2007 by Webmaster
